In 1994 Schrade wrote that they found AISI 440 A stainless was equal to the 1095 high carbon blade steel they were using, but with a high degree of stain and rust resistance. You can be assured whichever steel is used, the Old Timer will keep a good edge. Handles The handles are manufactured in Delrin®. This is a nylon based material used as it does not chip, break, shrink or swell in normal use. It is saw cut for grip and pinned to the knife body for durability. Old Timer handles are designed to last the life of the knife. Blade Shapes There are various blade shapes available. The common types are pen, spey, clip, drop point, skinning and sheepfoot. Generally the squarer shaped blades such as sheepfoot and spey are stronger while the sharp pointed blades such as slip are good for finer work. Each Old Timer knife featured on this web site gives the blade type in the description. ‘Stainless Steel’ – there are over 160 grades of stainless steel with various properties depending on whether they are used for sinks, pots and pans, knives or in industry. Stainless means just that – it stains less. This does not mean it will not mark or corrode, particularly when applied to blade stainless steel which has a high carbon content (and generally a pretty hard life). Old Timer is one of Schrade’s premium brands, used and recommended by generations.
